The Reality of a Kundalini Awakening Process - Beyond the Goddess Aesthetics

Oct 15, 2026

If you scroll through social media, Kundalini awakening - what I call Feminine Awakening - might look like the gateway to becoming a goddess. Images of women dancing in long dresses in front of the pyramids of Egypt or on a beach in Bali.

While that may be beautiful, it doesn't show the real raw transformational process. And perhaps not an awakening at all. There is an enormous difference between the temporary energy activation you experience at a workshop, and an awakening that permanently changes you. Maybe not into a goddess per se, but into a more evolved human - which I think is the whole purpose.

A full-blown Kundalini awakening does alter your consciousness, clear out trauma, and transform you. But it doesn't require a €4,000 retreat in a faraway country or months in an Ashram in India and will probably not look like perfect Insta content.

The journey looks different for everyone but the process seems to follow certain steps for most, and if you are somewhere in it and feel a little lost, this explanation of the steps might help you:

Stage 0 of a Kundalini Awakening: The Onset

The process seems to always begin with a sudden catalyst. The primordial feminine energy -  commonly known as Kundalini shakti - awakens and rises through the chakras, from tailbone to top of your head, sparking the process into motion. When the energy is fully awakened it is commonly described as a full-body orgasm. And this is probably why it is such a sought-after experience ; )

The onset often seem to be provoked by an intense connection with another individual (often referred to as a "twin flame"), a heartbreaking grief, traumatic event or deep healing.

Stage 1 of a Kundalini Awakening: Bliss Stage

The emotional high of the Bliss Stage could be compared with the honeymoon phase of a new relationship, magnified by a hundred, yet different. It brings a profound inner peace and an overwhelming sense of love and connectedness to everything and everyone. Euphoric waves of intense joy that bubble up from within. Most people seem to experience a deep sense of oneness - a clear realisation of being unified with the divine, the universe, or whatever concept resonates most. In this state, it is easy to get a bit of a "Jesus - or Buddha complex", feeling enlightened and elevated.

I honestly thought life was just going to be this way from now on - total bliss. Until I opened up to a yogi friend who said, "I don't want to rain on your parade, but this will pass... And as high as you are now, as low you will fall."

I was really annoyed by her words - what a party pooper! But the reality is that this phase is very temporary, usually lasting just a few weeks. And then, the real journey begins.

Buckle up!

Stage 2 of a Kundalini Awakening: The Dark Night of the Ego (The Great Purge)

I find the whole journey very relatable to being pregnant and giving birth. A natural process following certain steps and doing its own thing, whether you actively participate or not.

With that comparison, this is like that intense first trimester when you feel constantly nauseous and just want to sleep. It’s not very pleasant, but you can’t just skip it as its part of the process. (Yes, I know there are some lucky exceptions who claim they feel great all the way)

This phase is traditionally called "The Dark Night of the Soul," but the soul isn't really suffering - it's rather the ego that is having a hard time. It's also referred to as "The Big Purge," and just as I mentioned above, it's nothing that can be stopped or skipped once the process has started.

The powerful energy is clearing the body and mind of trauma, blockages, and old beliefs, requiring you to face yourself without numbing, lying, or escaping. The more you surrender and do the work, the smoother the process.

This clearing goes all the way down to a cellular level. So this isn't just happening on a mental level - it takes a real toll on the physical body, and it's not uncommon to face physical health issues during this phase.

Hopefully this will be studied more and become part of common knowledge in public health, because it is truly challenging not being able to have an open dialogue when consulting a doctor or other healthcare specialist.

This stage can last for weeks, months or even years - so patience and self compassion is very necessary.

Stage 3 of a Kundalini Awakening: The "Void" (The space in between)

The Void stage in a the awakening process is a period of total stillness. It may bring a sigh of relief after the turmoil of the ego death and profound purge - but it can also feel quite frustrating, as nothing seems to be happening. Not on the outside, anyway.

It is much like when a seed is planted in the ground - or in the womb - whichever analogy feels more relatable. At first, it simply rests in total darkness and even when it starts developing it takes a while before it is visible. This might be the most challenging phase of the journey for some because you are no longer who you were, nor are you yet who you are becoming. You are just in the between.

From the outside, this stage can probably easily be mistaken for depression or traditional burnout. Old relationships feel mismatched, lifelong interests feel empty, and things you used to be passionate about feel flat. You may also feel a strong urge to isolate and hibernate.

It can feel like you have lost your way, but try to meet it with curiosity and patience. You have been clearing out, and now you are preparing for your rebirth.

Stage 4 of a Kundalini Awakening: The Rebirth

Slowly, you begin coming back to life - but now as a evolved version of yourself. You start to discover what truly lights you up, uncovering new gifts, insights and ideas. This is the phase of getting to know and embodying the new you.

Stage 5 of a Kundalini Awakening: Re-orientation

Once you have stumbled and learned how to walk again - fully embodying her - you begin navigating life differently. From this space of integration, a natural urge to be of service often arises. You move forward deeply grateful for the journey, profoundly changed, and guided by a much stronger intuition.

However, as any healing journey its rarely a straight line, and you will likely return to different stages of the process more than once. And every time you learn something more.

💡My tip is to search information and learn about the process, and to seek guidance if needed, but most of all trust your inner knowing and only follow what truly resonates with you.
