Gaslighting, Word Salad, and Blame Shifting: Are You in a Narcissistic Relationship?
Oct 08, 2026When you are dealing with a partner who has narcissistic or psychopathic traits, you aren't just having relationship problems - you are navigating psychological abuse.
To help you see clearly, let’s put words to some of the manipulation tactics and dynamic you may be experiencing:
1. Gaslighting
This is a mind game designed to make you doubt your own reality. When you bring up an event, a promise, or a betrayal, you are met with denials or a rewriting of reality: "That never happened," "You are remembering it wrong," or "You are imagining things." Over time, gaslighting makes you doubt your own memory and your sanity, leaving you thinking: "Maybe it's me - maybe I'm crazy, paranoid, jealous..."
2. Walking on Eggshells / Minefield
This is the exhausting physical and emotional state you live in every single day. You live in constant state of hypervigilance, scanning his facial expressions, tone of voice, and moods. You feel like you are walking through a minefield, adapting your behaviour and choosing your word, trying to prevent the next unpredictable explosion or period of icy silence.
3. Word Salad & Circular conversations
Have you ever tried to resolve a simple issue, only to end up in a hours-long, circular argument that makes absolutely no sense? This is word salad. It is a smoke screen of circular logic, endless contradictions, and irrelevant details. It is designed to disorient you, confuse your train of thought, and leave you too exhausted to pursue the original issue.
4. Blame Shifting
In a narcissistic dynamic, he is never responsible for his own actions. Every time you try to point out how his behaviour hurt you, he will aggressively turn it around and blame you for causing the problem in the first place. You will hear things like: "If you hadn't done that, I wouldn't have reacted this way." He makes himself innocent and turns you into the problem.
5. The Silent Treatment
When a narcissist wants to punish you or force you back into obedience, they will often use the silent treatment. He refuses to communicate with you, treating you like you don't exist. He might even walk right into you, acting like he can't even see you. This psychological terror can go on for hours, days, or even weeks, making you desperate to fix whatever made him upset with you.
You cannot fix him. But you can save yourself.
